Revealed: Why Manchester United hero
Nemanja Vidic is leaving and transfer
targets who could replace him
Reds wouldn't offer their captain more than a one-year deal because of concerns about his fitness. Plus: Moyes is having TEN centre-halves watched
Nemanja Vidic decided to leave Manchester United because they only offered him a one year contract – not the two year deal he asked for, writes Steve Bates of the Sunday People.
There were concerns about the 31-year-old defender’s reliability, with him showing signs of wear and tear after eight years in the Premier League, and that made the Old Trafford giants reluctant to offer him more than one more year.
With Vidic set to leave at the end of the season, boss David Moyes has ordered his scouts to prepare detailed reports on TEN centre-backs – with Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk and Marseille star Nicolas N’Koulou both figuring prominently.
United have been monitoring Van Dijk all season after a string of top displays from the 22-year-old who joined Celtic from FC Groningen for £2.6 million last summer.
Cameroon star N’Koulou has also caught the eye with impressive performances for Marseille this season. Napoli are believed to have had an £11m bid for the 23-year-old rejected last month.
Moyes sees Phil Jones and Chris Smalling as the future defensive partnership for both United and England but privately accepts that they still need an experienced player alongside them.
And that is why – if he can – Moyes is more likely to sign a ready-made centre-half this summer.
The United boss said: “I think the hardest thing to do is introduce young centre-halves. It’s harder even than introducing young goalkeepers.
“With the quality of the strikers in the Premier League, it is probably the most difficult position and you tend to look for experience.’’
