U.S rapper Kanye West's controversial Yeezus album has gone gold.

After eight weeks on the charts, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has given the album a gold certificate for selling 500,000 units to date, BET reported.

The album is however Kanye's lowest selling album, managing to only sell 327,000 copies in its first week.

His 2007 album ‘Graduation’, pushed 957,000 units in its first week while ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’, released in 2010, sold 496,000 units.

Despite poor sales, Yeezus, which was released on June 18, debuted at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart edging out fellow rapper J Cole's Born Sinner.

West's sixth studio album to date, "Yeezus" comprises 15 tracks and features guest artists Daft Punk, Frank Ocean, DJ Skrillex and the American alternative hip hop collective Odd Future.

Before the official release of the album, the rapper revealed it would be titled ‘Yeezus’ receiving backlash from people who accused him of comparing himself to Jesus.

Former 'Full House' star Candace Cameron Bure slammed album title calling it ‘blasphemy.

In an interview with radio host Sway in 'Sway in the Morning', Bure said: "There’s a million other names out there … And you could have chosen one that is not one letter off from Jesus. I mean, that’s just a little too close. Come on," Bure was quoted Hip Hop Hollywood as saying.

She added: "He’s actually comparing himself to Jesus. Really?! Should any of us be doing that?! Maybe you should change your name to ‘Uda'!
