LOS ANGELES, CALIF.—Wentworth Miller is declining an invitation to be an honoured guest at a film festival in Russia because he is gay.
The 41-year-old actor said in a letter Wednesday to organizers of the St. Petersburg International Film Festival that he is “deeply troubled by the attitudes toward and treatment of gay people by the Russian government.”
In June, Russia passed a law against representations of “non-traditional sexual relations.”
The Prison Break star says he’s declining the invitation because he is gay.
“The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly,” he wrote. “Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.”
Miller is the latest celebrity to speak out against anti-gay legislation in Russia. The Winter Olympics will take place in Sochi in 2014 and many athletes and celebrities have stepped up to protest the country’s laws.
